Tactile photography in Ukraine TOUCH AND SEE, the photo exhibition, which can be seen by hands. For the first time visually impaired people will be able to feel the amazement, drama and emotions of some of the most impressive photos. For the first time in Ukraine the new concept photo exhibition which can be seen by hands, took place in Kyiv. The journey into the world of blind, and the real discover for the seeing. Next to the color photo is its tactical analog, a transparent raised file made of polymer. The tactile photo exhibition based on the Youriy Bilak’s collection UKRAINIANS, that have been already shown in Kiev, Lviv and Bucharest in 2007. The exhibition had a great success and a broad publicity in media. The UKRAINIANS was seen seen by more than 15 000 of visitors. The next step was the project “Touch and see”, which aim is to give a chance for the blinded people to learn art of the photo. Youry Bilak was inspired by the modern technologies, which are used by Aurélie Pallard, Michel Bris and Hoëlle Corvest-Morel for the “Louvre museum” and for the “Cité des sciences et de l’Industrie de Paris”, Pierre Fustier for the embossed files printing. He realized that he has to invent another “language”, which will be completely indifferent to the light, shadows, colors and especially to the perspective. For the first time blind people will be able to see the photos, to share their emotions with their seeing friends. The distinguishing feature of the tactical exhibition will be the accompaniment of the photos with the voice description. The 18 main cultural, political and art personalities of Ukraine were describing the photos: Karolina Ashion, Bohdan Beniuk, Oksana Bilozir, Masha Efrosinina, Foma (band “Mandry”), Olha Herasymiuk, Larysa Horolets, Volodymyr Hryshko, Yuriy Makarov, Nina Matvienko, Oleh Pinchuk, Oleksandr Polozhynskyj, Oleh Skrypka, Olha Sumska, Mykola Veresen’, VovaZiLvova, Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Kateryna Yushchenko. The event has been held in Kyiv 19th of May 2008 “Ukrainian House” (Ukrajinskyj Dim) with the support of “Open Ukraine” fund, “Ukraine 3000″ fund, and the French embassy in Ukraine. Were present : the First lady of Ukraine Kateryna Yushchenko, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Ambassador of France in Ukraine Jean-Paul Veziant.

“UKRAINIANS” is a 70 photographs exhibition ordered by the French Embassy of Ukraine in 2007. Knowing my view on my country, my roots, the roots of my parents, they asked me to make a report on Ukrainians from various areas. I went to Lviv, the coal mines of Novovolensk and Chervonohrad, the Lemko’s churches of Uzhorod, the Carpathians mountains, Chernivtsi, Odessa, the shipyards of Mykolayiv, the Poltava region, Kharkiv and the Donetsk coal basin. My photographs make a colourful report of the daily lives and celebrations of the inhabitants. East from west, I have been warmly welcomed. And anyone in Ukraine you meet, feels overall, deeply “UKRAINIAN”.
