BAKHCHYSARAI
The Khan’s Palace or “Hansaray” is located in the town of Bakhchysaraï, which means “the Palace of Gardens” in Turkish. Many Ottoman buildings still exist in this wonderful Crimean city in Ukraine. The palace was built in the 16th century and became home to a succession of Crimean Khans (Khan meaning leader in both Mongolian and Turkish languages).
The walled enclosure contains living quarters, gardens and a cemetery. Inside this building reflecting the traditional Tatar style, there is a harem transformed in a museum, where I had the chance to make these photographs.
